S1E21 - “Secrets and Lies”

It’s late at night, and we open on a ship dock in Baltimore Maryland. Was is this, the second season of The Wire with Frank Sobotaka? Anyways, Ailyah Nadir and her two children Dalia and Faris rendezvous with John Summers, and he gets brings them to an unknown location. Cut to John Summers returning home where he is blitz attacked, and then tortured by unknown assailants. He defiantly says: “You’ll never find her” and then “I knew it had to be you” before being murdered. The FBI then stage his death to look like a suicide, leaving a note that says: “I AM A PATRIOT. LONG LIVE FREEDOM. GOD BLESS AMERICA.” All the while this happens we’re listening to screamo music???

Cut to BAU headquarters in Quantico Virgnia. Mandy looking good in a denim jacket. He makes a call to an unknown someone and says: “I see the paper reported the death of our mutual friend. I’ll wait for your call.” He then falls asleep at his desk sitting up with his feet on the desk. CIA agent Bruno Hawks arrives at Quantico and awakens Mandy from his sleep. He and Mandy served in the military together and are friends. We learn that John Summers was CIA, and worked for Bruno in his counterintelligence unit. We learn that another counterintelligence agent requested a psych evaluation on John Summers. Gideon completed this evaluation. Bruno tells Mandy that he doesn’t know how requested the evaluation, but he believes it was requested by a mole in their unit who is working for the same terrorist organization that Ailyah Nadir was running from. This mole is the unsub.

Hotch tells the team that the CIA’s counter intelligence unit is engaged in a mission to save one of its informants, Ailyah Nadir. They believe that one of their agents is a mole, and they’ve locked down the unit so that the BAU team can go in and profile them all. Ailayh Nadir has been beaten and sexually assaulted by her husband Hassan Nadir, who is a diplomat for the Saudi government, and a fundraiser for “major terrorist operations”. Ailayah has since turned informant on her husband, and Summers smuggled Ailayah and her two children to the USA. The CIA made it look like Ailayah and her two children died in a car accident and there bodies were too disfigured to identify. Since then she has been in hiding, but now Hassan is in America, because the CIA’s mole has filled him in on everything.

Cut to the CIA office of counterintelligence. There are 22 agents that are part of the counterintelligence unit who could possibly be the unsub. Also Garcia and JJ are still at Quantico, and being watched by a pair of CIA agents. One of the agents tells Garcia that she’s on A List (possibly that she poses a threat to national security?) He then gives Garcia access to the CIA’s computer system. Garcia immediately says to JJ: “You know what this means? I’ll be able to find out if Princess Diana’s death was really an accident.” And JJ goes: “I think that’s exactly the kind of thing that got you on their list.”

Profile: TYPE- A PERSONALITY

-   Overachiever

-   Highly adaptable

-   Well educated

-   Virtually unshakable

-   Manipulative enough to persuade a loyal foreign national to betray their country or a wife to betray her husband

-   Most importantly, this unsub long ago accepted the reality they will be summarily executed if caught

-   Life means nothing to this unsub

We see surveillance video of Gideon meeting with John Summers and completing the psych eval, three days before Summers was murdered. Summer tells Gideon that he has narrowed the mole in the counterintelligence unit down to four possible candidates, and then talks about how he loves boats. The 4 agents who could possibly be the unsub are: Bruno Hawks, Gina Sanchez, Olivia Hopkins, and Kruger Spence. These also happen to the supervisors of the CIA unit, so John Summers bosses. The BAU looks over the 4 suspect’s resumes and tries to find a stressor.

Kruger Spence: Recruited at the age of 18 after graduating MIT. 6 years of experience as a weapon systems designer.  I1 of 197. He butted against the system and didn’t work well with authority, so the CIA moved him into field operations in China for 8 years before transferring him here (aka – stressor).

Olivia Hopkins: Divorced mother of 2 (yeah of course let’s bring up her relationship and home life because she’s a woman). 9 years in field operations in Europe, visited Saudi Arabi with Kruger. So the BAU is saying they slept together. Why is this woman solely being defined on her interpersonal relationships????

Gina Sanchez: West Point Graduate. Black belt in two martial arts. Served in Iraq doing psychological operations with military intelligence. Joined the CIA 5 years ago. Speaks 3 languages including Arabic. We also learn that Gideon wrote an evaluation on Gina Sanchez that took her out of the field because he believes that there will come a time when she can’t take orders.

Bruno Hawks: Extensive field ops in the middle east and Europe. Did his military service with Gideon.

Cut to Aaliyah and her children in a shipping container. They run out of water. Their battery operated lantern stops working. Things are getting… desperate.

Reid is assigned to follow Kruger Spence. Reid is too helpful, and tells Kruger to search for Aaliyah in places close to Summers apartment that only Summers would have access to.

Morgan is working with Gina Sanchez. Morgan is kinda being an asshole and Gina has her co-worker who she calls “Joystick” zoom a drone in to show Morgan’s house and Morgan’s dog. Who we haven’t heard about before? And his name is Clooney??? We also learn that Gina was responsible for making Summers’ murder look like a suicide. She tells Morgan that all CIA operatives are forced to write a suicide letter when they join the CIA.

Elle works with Olivia Hopkins. Who apparently lost custody of her kids? Apparently Olivia was taken hostage in Europe. Elle asks Olivia if she was raped was she was kidnapped in Europe? What the fuck Elle? You have a background in sex crimes. Kruger steps in and states that he and Olivia were making the bump bump the night Summers was killed. Yeah girl we already knew!

Gideon profiles Bruno (his friend) by saying that he has Daddy Issues and is desperately trying to not follow in his father’s footsteps, but he is following in them. Gideon asks him how he feels about Olivia’s death and he says that he feels sad, but wants to focus on saving Aalyiah Nadir’s life. Also Bruno is Gideon’s friend and Gideon should not be watching him! Another member of the BAU should.

Garcia learns that Summers ordered the evaluation on himself. Aaliyah leaves the shipping container to find water. She leaves the kids alone and tells them to not leave. Garcia figures out that Summers was telling Gideon during his evaluation where Aaliyah is. She’s in a shipping container in a shipyard in Baltimore (remember how Summers likes boats). The unsub has the impeccable timing to hack into the BAU’s feed, so the unsub knows where Aaliyah is. Aaliyah returns to find Hassan has her children.

Gideon decides that unsub is Kruger Spence because he was cheating on his wife with Olivia Spence. “After betraying his wife, betraying his country was easy”.  The BAU take him into custody, and Hotch hands Kruger a note saying that this is their only offer. Kruger refuses the offer on the note and says that he’s innocent.

Gina and Morgan go to the ship yard to try to find Aaliyah. Reid uses the drone satellite system to help them find the shipping container. Morgan says: “FBI! Let the lady go and put the gun down.”

Gideon and Bruno butt heads. The shipping container hasn’t passed through US customs yet, so technically Hassan Nadir is being arrested on international waters. The BAU wants to bring him into custody so that he can’t use his diplomatic immunity. Bruno wants to sweep everything under the rug and instructs Gina to kill all members of the Nadir family. Gina asks him to cut the visual feed, and Bruno does. And then we hear gun shots.

We learn that Bruno Hawks is the unsub and mole. Gideon confronts him and says that the only reasonable response after Olivia’s death would have been if Bruno said he felt guilty about her death. We also see the note that Hotch gave Kruger. It says: “We know it’s not you, Bruno is the mole.” Cut to Gina and Morgan in the shipping yard. Hassan has been taken into custody, Aaliyah and the kids are fine. Gina didn’t shoot anybody. She tells Morgan she figured out that Bruno was the mole because “therein’t a reason in this world to kill somebody who knows as much as Hassan does.”

We learn that Bruno was being paid 20 million dollars from Hassan for helping him find his wife. Bruno says “20 million dollars from Hassan will go a very long way to helping occupy my mind on a beach somewhere.” And Gideon says: “Only beach you’ll see is on a postcard I send you from my vacation.” The BAU takes Bruno into custody.

Back at BAU headquarters the CIA agents leave JJ and Garcia, and there’s a few minutes before the CIA database is wiped from Garcia’s computer. Garcia looks for Prince William’s phone number, and she finds it. She doesn’t have time to write it down but I wrote it down. 44 020 9133. Garcia also says “Sleep well, sweet prince.” And JJ says “Good night, crazy person.”
