S2E23 - “The Evilolution of Frank”

The episode opens with the music of the youths as Gideon walks through the streets? He sees kids skateboarding. Gideon is buying flowers for a date (he says it is someone from college) and the guy behind him is so ANGRY that Gideon cannot make up his mind over what kind of flowers he wants. He doesn't know what the names of flowers look like. Hotch calls him and says that there was a request from Safe Guard for personal files on certain agents - basically it isn’t an annual evaluation because its too early for that - more likely it is an assessment of the BAU, redistributing funds and making cuts. Gideon is like “so what are they gonna take? The jet? I prefer trains anyway!”. Hotch says the only file they didn’t request was his (Hotch).

As Gideon leaves he sees someone who looks familiar - the woman that Frank was in love with - Jane. Gideon gets a phone call from “Sarah” who he apologizes for being late to, but instead of Sarah answering, it is Frank asking him about birds. I think it is worth pointing out that Gideon is wearing a wedding ring during all of this. Frank says he wants Jane and he knows she came to Washington.

Cut and we see Hotch in an office. It looks like he’s seeing a therapist? Fucking ELLE FANNING is a guest star in this episode, according to the credits.

Hotch is talking to her and says that he loves his work but….she asks to tell her what happened after he got off the phone with Gideon. At 7:15 he got a page requesting the BAU at Gideon’s apartment. It is smeared with blood and a complete mess - a crime scene. Gideon’s cell phone was left behind. Gideon is a suspect because they saw him running, covered in blood wielding a gun. Garcia is wearing a black wig. She’s very upset about being called in because she was on a date. We see that there is a body at Gideon’s apartment - a woman. And there were no signs of forced entry. There were no defensive wounds - he is a sexual sadist, and knew exactly what he was doing. We know this was Frank - given it was the same kind of killing. Part of her rib bone was left in her hand. A message for the BAU.

Hotch gets a call from Gideon - he’s at a payphone. Gideon says he saw Frank walking down the street - he almost had him. Hotch tells Gideon to stay low. The BAU regroups outside, Prentis and Morgan try to figure out where Gideon went, but Hotch tells them not to worry about it because he is safe. A small boy with a skateboard rolls up to Morgan and is like “agent Morgan?” everyone is like uhhhhh and starts spewing “shit about beauty and sins” - quoting the same things that Frank had said before. And “give me Jane”. Basically saying if they give him Jane he wont kill anyone else.

Cut to Garcia in her car, sitting in a parking lot freaking out. Gideon shows up and runs into her car, telling her to drive. Cut and JJ is looking through evidence. She sees a photograph of Gideon’s “Murder book” (according to Hotch). The first page was ripped out, but Hotch fills them in saying that it is a list of all the people he has saved, names, dates, etc. and now Frank seemingly has that list - and it is who he is going after. Garcia and Gideon roll up to the Smithsonian. Gideon is cleaned up and out of blood stained clothing, and Garcia is wearing mildly culturally appropriative clothes? Gideon says how they need to figure out the evolution of Frank

The BAU starts calling all the potential victims. Cut and we see Frank impersonating Gideon meeting with Rebecca(thats Rebecca right?). The BAU calls Rebecca and tells her to leave, but before she can, Frank comes up and shoots her up with ketamine. He takes the phone and tells them he will not stop until he has Jane. The BAU rolls up to Rebecca’s apartment and sees that it is too late and Frank has murdered her. Frank is escalating, and JJ gives them a call saying that they may have found and arrested Jane. additionally, they now think that he may be going after children. Cut and we see Jane in jail throwing a fit. Prentis shows up and takes Jane out of jail.

JJ realizes that Tracey Belle must be the next victim. AKA Elle Fanning. They recently relocated to McClean VA. we quickly cut and learn that Tracey has been kidnapped, and her parents FREAK out. But why was she by herself? Why wasn’t there a babysitter? Jane tells Prentis and JJ that Frank has changed.

Gideon and Garcia try to figure out how they can further profile Frank. They realize that Frank has only killed 12 women in their 20s, which is odd - they would expect that to be a higher number. They also realize that Jane was 22 when they met, and that he must see women in their 20s as his mother.  Jane tells them that Frank kept his mother’s name and they were very close. We learn that Frank tried to kill Jane when they were together, but he stopped himself. And thats why they aren’t together right now - she’s on the run and he’s chasing her.

Gideon realizes how Frank is obsessed with facts, but the only thing that moved him was a story he told Gideon at the diner about a woman being found in the Upper East Side dead in her apartment. But! This sounds fake! Garcia and Gideon cannot find anything about a woman named Mary Brightcofe being dead. They get a phone call and it is Frank & Tracey calling - Tracey begs Gideon to help. Garcia says she cannot trace the call because its not long enough - which sounds fake. Gideon just abandons her with a loaded gun to go after them. Cut and we’re at Union Station. There are TONS OF SWAT and police swarming the place. JJ and Reid roll up to the apartment in Manhattan. JJ tells Reid they are NOT splitting up.

Frank is sitting on a bench on a platform - you know, the one near the palm trees even though Union station is in DC. Hotch approaches Frank and they bring Jane over. But he wont tell them where Tracey is. Jane tells Frank she won’t go with him. Gideon rolls up and tells Frank about how they found out who his mom was and he isn’t special or a “rare bird”.

During this JJ and Reid find Tracey locked in the closet and his mom’s very decomposed body is on her bed surrounded with flowers. Again, this is NY someone would’ve smelled the decomposition.

While on the train platform Frank tries to convince Jane to come with him, saying how much fun they had together and how it doesn’t have to end there. She goes with him and they say they love one another and then jump in front of one of the incoming trains because WHY ELSE WOULD THE SCENE TAKE PLACE ON THE PLATFORM WE SAW THIS COMING. Back inside the station, Gideon gets a call from JJ who has Tracey on the phone thanking Gideon for saving her. Cut and we’re back to Hotch talking to his superior. She is saying she does not believe he is no longer effective in his post. Instead of arguing he profiles her like crazy. He defends his team and says he stands by his actions and his team.

Next we see Prentis in the same office - meeting with the supervisor. The supervisor is telling Prentis that it is time that Hotch’s career comes to and end, and she must help ensure that happens if she wants to stay with the BAU. Anyways, justice for Rebecca Bryant.
